Firearms are generally classified into three broad types: (1) handguns, (2) rifles, and (3) shotguns. Rifles and shotguns are both considered "long guns."

Magpul Maglink: “Won’t be long now….”

May 11, 2012

Magpul’s Facebook page has given us a little teaser that we can soon expect to see the new Maglink. Anything Magpul is always exciting, and makes the gear lovers out there shake with anticipation. Like a lot of other popular manufacturers in the tactical accessories market, Magpul has had past issues with getting their announced products to the consumers hands in a timely fashion. Luckily, they have vastly improved their efforts and we are seeing shorter and shorter distance between announcement and release dates.

The Maglink is nothing new or truly innovative yet is still a very welcomed accessory from Magpul. Although, the Surefire 60 round AR-15 magazine is definitely oozing with functional coolness, it is much less expensive to couple two P-mags together to equal the same capacity. One of the reasons for Magpul’s control of the AR accessories market is that they release quality US made products with very low price points. The “cheap” foreign made manufacturers struggle to compete with the American Made product’s pricing. This is always a great thing to see in any industry. Not only are their parts generally the very best, but they are quite often less expensive!

The Maglink is not the least expensive product of its type, but it does reside on the lower end at $17.99. I would much rather buy a Magpul product for and extra 20% than a foreign made piece that holds the title of being “cheap”. The Maglink does what it’s name implies and links two Magpul Pmags together. It will NOT work with the first generation Pmag 30′s so make sure to check and see what you have. It is also compatible with the E-mag although it wasn’t optimized for that fit. Hopefully, we will see this product in stores very soon and we will post some pictures on our Facebook when we get our hands on one.

Here are the stats:

Features

  • Fits second generation PMAG 30 and new PMAG 30 M3*
  • Impact resistant polymer construction provides light weight and resists operational abuse
  • Wide-set, two-piece bolt on design resists flexing
  • Integral grooves interface with PMAG ribbing to eliminate slippage

Specifications

  • MagLink Magazine Coupler
    • Weight: 2.8 oz.

*NOTE: the MagLink is NOT compatible with the first generation PMAG 30 (with Black follower), PMAG 20, or 7.62×51 PMAG 20LR.

While not optimized for the smooth-sided design of the EMAG or PMAG 30G, the MagLink will still fit and function.

The Red Jacket ZK-22 Bullpup Rifle

April 24, 2012

Red Jacket Firearms, made famous by the TV Series “Sons of Guns”, will be releasing a bullpup rifle kit for the 10/22. 10/22 kits have long been popular; with many tactical style kits hitting the market over the last few years. The ZK-22 kit has a FN P-90′ish appearance which I think is very nice looking. It is compatible with both carbine barrels and .920″ bull barrels, 18.5 inches or longer. Since the bullpup reduces the length of the firearm a great deal, an 18.5 inch barrel is required as to not be considered a NFA weapon.

The ZK-22 is named to go after the popular “Zombie” firearms market that is widely popular lately. The kit possesses an ambidextrous charging handle (Red Jacket claims that the shell deflector will allow full ambidextrous use.). Also, included is a picatinny rail for attaching whatever optics you feel is best, and it is fully capable of using a wide variety of magazines including MGW 50-round coffin mag. As with most all .22lr rifles, this will be legal for use in California. Whether this set up is the “perfect” firearm for the impending zombie invasion or not, it will make a fun range gun to practice your trigger work and reloading. The MSRP is set at a reasonable $299.00 and the first 400 orders will only have to pay $229.99. Look forward to a Fall 2012 release.

The Econo-Can Suppressor

April 23, 2012

A few friends have been asking a lot of questions concerning the legality of suppressors. Regretfully, California does not allow civilian ownership of suppressors, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the US is the same. Most states allow for the possession of them as long as the appropriate Federal paperwork is done. The only real drawback to suppressor ownership is the cost. Not only do you have to purchase the “can” which can be rather expensive, you also have to purchase the federal tax stamp as well. For many this is too expensive for just a toy in the safe.

American Specialty Ammo has come up with an innovative way to reduce the cost for those looking for a fun way to suppress their .22LR pistol or rifle. The “Econo-Can” is an adapter which is considered a suppressor by the ATF and must be registered as such. The adapter uses oil filters as the expansion chamber and are easily threaded to the end of the “Econo-Can” adapter. The “Econo-Can” is threaded to your firearm via 1/2x28mm threads. With the Econo-Can adapter retailing at only $55 and oil filters being very inexpensive the largest expense is the Federal tax stamp which is $200.

For Californians: The Franklin Armory CSW

April 23, 2012

Everyone in California, and most of the country, knows that it is difficult to have fun with a gun in our beautiful state. Although we may have it more difficult here, it is far from impossible. Anytime restrictive laws pass, a few individuals are able to see the big picture of a new product that will meet the regulation and still allow the public to have a blast. The Franklin Armory CSW is one such item. Made as a kit for the AR-15 platform. it replaces the butt stock and pistol grip of your rifle. Since the kit is not considered a pistol grip and the whole system is not considered a rifle, pistol, shotgun, etc; it is free to use a detachable magazine. Remember that you still can’t run a flash suppressor on your rifle, but a muzzle brake will be more useful anyway.

The “spade” grip possesses two independent triggers which are attached directly to the trigger of your AR. This feature will not increase your rate of fire, but will protect you from creating a burst fire weapon. Many of us have possessed high capacity magazines prior to the California ban, so this setup will give you more opportunities to blast away. Although, this in not ideal for home defense, or tactical training, it is a fun kit to have at a fairly reasonable price. With a suggested MSRP of $675, I’m sure you will be able to find an even better price on the street. If you pick one up, send us some pictures or a video of it sitting in the middle of your living room.

Here are the stats:

Characteristics:

Independent Triggers on Each Grip
Works with Existing AR-15 Firearms
No Permanent Modification
An “Other”–Not Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, or AOW
Can Use Hi-Cap Mags in CA
Does not Alter Rate of Fire

Technical Specifications:

Made of Durable, Lightweight 6061 Aluminum
Type III Hard Coat Anodized
